Saucers in the sky
by Tom Poslett
And there were saucers in the sky
There were comets flying and stars shining and saucers in the sky
And jet turbines drumming and the sixties coming through
Yuri Gagarin in the news – between the BFPO tunes
We’re getting grainy glimpses of flared dresses kissing
Heroes in cartoons and lovers in the dunes
With their sights set on the moon
All caught in drawings – that burn into a schoolboy’s eyes
And there were saucers in the sky
And we had dogs in orbit in silver rockets with graphics on the side
We’d get fantastic plastics and send our sputniks out to space
To colonise the stars and leave our footprints in the dust
On ambitious missions from lunar stations – to take the landing craft
And see the planets spinning past
As we skim through saturn rings
All caught in drawings – that burn into a schoolboy’s eyes
And there were saucers in the sky
Pierced by crystal towers, atomic powers were testing isotopes
All set: futures gleaming. All just dreaming as Bikini atoll smoked
And the Dakotas hope to fly into a blue Pacific sky
Another shockwave passes the RayBan glasses of pilots standing by
Imaginations fuelled – as the neutron cinders cooled
All caught in drawings – that burn into a schoolboy’s eyes
And there were saucers in the sky
There were comets flying and stars shining and saucers in the sky
And jet turbines drumming and the sixties coming through
Running on chrome and kryptonite in our white wall Thunderbirds
And the cities purred with Cadillacs and De Soto Fireflites
Their afterburner lights –go cruising through the nights
All caught in drawings – that burn into a schoolboy’s eyes
